Q&A: Long term repair of curbs and gutters

From a public works director's perspective, what can be done to provide a long-term repair for our city's damaged curb and gutters, sewer inlets and deeply spalled concrete surfaces?
I think we have a good answer for you. It's called DURACRETE. Let me address the easy problems first: the curbs, gutters and sewer inlet structures. I am recommending Duracrete to you because of its unparalleled field performance and versatility as a repair mortar. Key to your success will be a good repair procedure and a material that can be relied upon to work under a wide range of placement conditions.

Let's start with a plan for the storm sewer inlets. First, I recommend that you familiarize yourself and your crew with the many recommended preparation guidelines and repair procedures available from the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI). This organization will be a deep well of technical expertise and practical recommendations for you and your organization when you are faced with concrete repairs. Contact them by e-mail at www.icri.org or by phone at 847-827-0830.

Secondly, once the original concrete has been prepared and any damaged reinforcing rods have been repaired, reattached or replaced, scrub the prepared inlet repair surface with a slurry bond coat of L&M Duracrete. Immediately following and before the slurry can dry, follow your steps with a stiff mixture of L&M Duracrete mortar to regain the original geometry and shape of the inlet structure. Your crew will quickly become expert at placing and shaping Duracrete mortar. L&M Duracrete is very user friendly!

Now, addressing a separate part of your question, curbs and gutter repair can also be accomplished with L&M Duracrete. Again, plan on using ICRI guidelines to prepare the damaged curbs and gutter sections. Once the repair surfaces are prepared and are found to be in sound condition, apply a flowable slurry coat of L&M Duracrete. Immediately mix and trowel on a stiff mixture of L&M Duracrete mortar. Plan on using a metal, plastic or wood "template" to screed off the excess L&M Duracrete. The template needs to be a faithful representation of the original curb and gutter geometry and shape. Once the curb and gutter repair has set and is stiff, brush on a thin, flowable surface coat of L&M Duracrete over the entire repair and the adjacent existing concrete. This will provide a continuous, uniform appearance to the repair area.

Deep spalls on driving and walking surfaces need to be prepared for repair, again per ICRI guidelines. Once the spall area has been prepared, apply a slurry coat of L&M Duracrete and immediately mix and place a stiffer mixture of L&M Duracrete. For economy, on large repairs that exceed over 3 inches in depth, some 3/8" clean pea gravel may be added to the fresh Duracrete during mixing. Pea gravel may be added at a rate of 25% to 50% by weight of L&M Duracrete. After placement protect your L&M Duracrete repair from sun and wind until the repair has hardened. Aside from protection from extreme conditions, no other curing protection is necessary. The repaired area may be opened to traffic within twelve hours, depending on temperature and effective drying/curing time.

Unique to city/county and municipalities is the mandated design for ADA approaches to intersections. Sometimes the curb drop has already been installed and the ramp surface was broomed or raked. The need for a truncated domes texture arises and can be accomplished with ease by using versatile L&M Duracrete as a "stamped" overlay topping on the already existing ramp. Where required, color or pigment can be added when mixing L&M Duracrete.

Some larger municipalities are mandating that building owners be responsible for the concrete pavement closest to their building. L&M Duracrete can meet most of the repair needs, but this product is not to be used to replace significant concrete pavement sections. There comes a time when total removal and replacement of concrete is the best thing to do. Otherwise, L&M Duracrete can solve many of your concrete repair problems.
